I met Bowling when I was teaching at my previous school. At the time, she was our librarian. With her infectious smile and lovely dimples, she would light up the whole room. Children and adults in our school were drawn to her friendliness. Her son and my daughter were in the same class together, so we often talked about our teenagers, life, and work. Bowling decided to quit her job as a librarian and is now selling cookies. Her Moody Cookies are amazing and my family loves all the flavors, so much that it becomes a challenge to make sure my kids don't eat all the cookies at once. This lady is empowering because she is doing what she loves to do. Therefore, she deserves to be in the Spotlight! Enjoy my interview with this amazing woman, who is the first person to be in the spotlight! Also, do not forget to order her moody cookies! What gave you the idea to start selling cookies? I’ve always been interested in cooking and baking. I stopped working a few years ago, I started to spend more time in the kitchen like never before. It wasn’t just feeding my family and killing time, but I had fun exploring new recipes, ingredients, equipment, and researching said recipes as well. As time went by, my husband encouraged me to try selling something simple that I’d enjoy making. I agreed, my thought was that if I liked being in the kitchen so much I might as well try to make money out of it.
How did your family react when you told them that you want to sell cookies? They are always so supportive, especially when it comes to testing out the taste and texture. I do trust and value their inputs. Besides eating the samples, they help with promoting and selling as well. How long have you been into baking? I’ve been cooking for a long time. The food I’ve cooked has been more of a savory sort rather than sweet like a dessert or snack. Baking came much later, more recently to be specific. This is actually new territory for me, compared to cooking the food I’ve put on the table. What do you find most challenging about your business? The selling. I find selling difficult. I’m not a sales person. I don’t think I’m brave enough to go up to people and offer them my food, not to mention selling it to them. Luckily, with social media, it has made introducing and promoting my cookies far easier than without. What do you find most rewarding about your business? When I see photos of smiling customers on social media or when they send them to me. Feedback and testimonials always makes me smile and want to continue baking. I do have moments, when I thought about stopping. Which I think is part of doing business, no matter how big or small. Can you easily combine a business like this with taking care of a family? To be honest, I thought that working from home and baking only when I was in the ‘"mood" would make it easy with the family. For the most part, 11 months out of a year, it’s a breeze. Only when it hits the holiday season does the business take up most of my time and energy I’m quite new at this, but it was far easier in the holidays in 2016 than the year before. So, I guess I’m getting a better handle at this. It’s going to be awhile until I can easily handle the holiday season like a pro and be able to balance business and my time with the family. Your Instagram tells us: Bake, cool, pack, decorate and repeat…and so many things in between. What are the "so many other things" that you do?
Oh, a lot. I shop for ingredients and packaging, calculate what I need and how much, take photos, make promotional images, get them printed (if needed), promote the products (phone and all social media), communicate with the customers, do the balance sheet, arrange the deliveries or do the deliveries myself, and the 2 most grueling tasks; washing the equipment and cleaning the kitchen. Are there any other things/projects you are currently working on? Business-wise, nothing at the moment. There will definitely be new flavors in the future. Do you have any tips for other women who would like to do something similar? Don’t wait, start with what you have or what you’re able to acquire at this present time. Enjoy the journey.
